A ciliary beat cycle consists of an effective stroke in which the extended cilium makes an oar-like movement towards one side, and a recovery stroke in which the cilium moves back by propagating a bend from base to tip

Effective Stroke:

  • Effective stroke is process of movement of cilia actively towards a direction with a bow like a bend.
  • This stroke requires energy and at this point, cilia are fully extended.
  • But, after the effective stroke, the cilia needs to be recovered from extended position to a fully flexed position to prepare it for next effective stroke.
  • This movement of recovering the cilia from the extended position to flexed position is called recovery stroke.
  • Based, on condition it may be an active or passive process.
