Electric wires used in domestic wiring are made of copper metal because copper is a good conductor of electricity and it has low resistance, now the copper wire chosen for household wiring are of such thickness so as to allow a certain maximum current to pass through them but if the current passing through the wire exceeds the maximum value the copper wires get overheated and may even cause fire which happens only in 2 cases overloading and short circuiting. Now to avoid these circumstances we use an electric fuse in the wiring. A fuse is a safety device having short length of a thin, tin-plated copper wire having low melting point, which melts and breaks the circuit if the current exceeds a safe value. It works on heating effect of current and the fuse should be placed in a live wire.
