Electromeric effect - Electromeric effect refers to a molecular polarizability effect occurring by an intramolecular electron displacement (sometimes called the 'conjugative mechanism' and, previously, the 'tautomeric mechanism') characterized by the substitution of one electron pair for another within the same atomic octet of electrons.

  • The temporary shift due to complete transfer of pi bond electrons to one of the atoms joined by double or triple bond, only in the presence of a suitable reagent inducing polarity in non polar covalent bond or enhancing polarity of polar covalent bond is called electromeric effect.

  • This effect is purely temporary and takes place only in the presence of an electrophillic reagent.
