Ester, any of a class of organic compounds that react with water to produce alcohols and organic or inorganic acids. Esters derived from carboxylic acids are the most common. The term ester was introduced in the first half of the 19th century by German chemist Leopold Gmelin.

An activity to form an Ester in a school laboratory:

  • Take 2 ml of ethanoic acid in a test tube and and 2 ml of pure ethanol (absolute alcohol).
  • Pour the contents of the test tube into a 250 ml beaker containing 50 ml of water and smell the resulting solution. A sweet odour of ester is obtained .
