An ester is an organic compound where the hydrogen in the compound's carboxyl group is replaced with a hydrocarbon group. Esters are derived from carboxylic acids and (usually) an alcohol. While carboxylic acid has the -COOH group, the hydrogen is replaced by a hydrocarbon in an ester

ACTIVITY : to demonstrate esterification process using ethanol and acetic acid

materials required ; because, water, testing, ethanol and ethanoic acid, concentrated sulphuric acid .

Procedure;

take 2 ml of Ethanol in a test tube

add 2 ml of ethanoic acid into it

add few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid

warm in a beaker containing water

observe the smell of the products formed

Observation : pleasant fruity smelling compound ester is formed

Conclusion: carboxylic acid reacts with alcohol in presence of concentrated H2SO4 which act as a dehydrating agent to form esters....
