Answer:

FIR includes the date, time, place, incident details, and a description of the person(s) involved. The FIR should mention the date and time of the incident and the identity of the accused (if known) in a precise manner. After it is registered, the complainant is entitled to a copy free of charge. The Crime Number in the FIR is the reference for all future follow-ups.

  • The Police can begin investigation into a crime only with the registration of an FIR (First Information Report). The law states that it is compulsory for an officer in charge of a police station to register an FIR when a person gives information about a cognizable offence.

➲  The FIR usually mentions the date, time, place of the offence, basic details of the offence which includes the description of the event. It also states the name & address of the complainant.

➲  If known, the identity of the accused persons and witnesses is also mentioned. There is a prescribed form in which the police registers an FIR and it is signed by the complainant.

➲  The complainant also has a legal right to get a free copy of the FIR from the police.
