Ionic compounds are compounds which are formed due to transfer of electrons from metal to a non metal.
Properties of ionic compounds:
i) generally present in solid state.
Reason: because of storing force of attraction btw the positive & negative ions. These compounds are generally brittle.
ii) have high melting and boiling point
Reason: because a considerable amount of energy is required to break a strong inter ionic attraction.
iii) soluble in water and in soluble in solvent such as kerosene , petrol etc
iv) good conductor of heat and electricity in aqueous or molten state
Reason: this is possible in aqueous state since the electrostatic forces of attraction btw oppositely charged ions are overcome due to heat. Thus ions move freely and conduct electricity.
