IP Address is a unique identifier. Every computer on a network has a unique identifier. Just like we address a letter to send in the mail, same way computer’s IP address works for communicate on the network. Computers use the unique identifier (IP address) to send data to specific computer on a network. Every computer on the Internet use TCP/IP protocol as the standard for how to communicate on the network.  

In the TCP/IP protocol, the unique identifier for a computer is called its IP address.  

There are two standards for IP addresses: -  

  • IP Version 4  
  • IP Version 6
