irony of the story is john 's ghost stories are very popular among readers though he himself does not have any interest in writing ghost stories.
Also the ghosts are taken to be harmful but in the story Helen who is the ghost instead of harming John is presenting the problem of her community infront of john.
Also Helen asks john to influence people for not using ouija board but on the same day john's wife buys a ouija board and even throws a ouija board party and infact because of his wife insisting him he himself gets involved in the party.
Generally people are scared of ghosts but in this story john is not scared of helens appearance as she never comes infront of john as a whole.
John was also scared that his wife who is even scared of a mouse would not be able to face helen who was a ghost and would faint on seeing her but when his wife sees helen she starts smiling as she was satisfied that helen was a ghost as according to lavinia john had an affair with someone.
