What is an octet ?

Octet is an arrangement of an atom where the outermost shell is filled by 8 electrons .

How do elements attain an octet?

In order to attain octet , the elements either lose or gain electrons depending upon their reactivity , number of valence electrons and various other factors.

For a metal :

A metal loses electrons to complete octet .

A metal only has 1 , 2, or 3 valence electrons .

For a non-metal :

A non - metal gains electrons to complete octet .

A metal has 4 , 5 , 6 or 7 valence electrons .

Hope it helps :-)
