Anaerobic respiration is the opposite of aerobic respiration. It does not depend on oxygen, unlike aerobic respiration.

1. The definition of Anaerobic Respiration is "Anaerobic respiration is the type of respiration through which cells can break down sugars to generate energy in the absence of oxygen. This is in contrast to the highly efficient process of aerobic respiration, which relies on oxygen to produce energy."

2. The chief characteristic of Anaerobic respiration is, it can take place without the presence of oxygen.

3. Anaerobic respiration mostly is a function of microorganisms but can provisionally take place in multi-level organisms as well. Anoxic conditions or situations where the oxygen is not sufficient can lead to anaerobic respiration in multi-level organisms.

4. It is a metabolic process that takes place without the presence of oxygen.

5. Glycolysis is the first stage that results in the formation of ATP followed by fermentation.

Anaerobic respiration is respiration using electron acceptors other than molecular oxygen. Although oxygen is not the final electron acceptor, the process still uses a respiratory electron transport chain.
