Antimatter is made of antiparticles. An antiparticle (like the positron) is a particle with the same mass and spin, but exactly the opposite values of all other properties as the particle of which it is the “anti” (in this case the electron).

It can be created from pure energy in “pair production” where a particle and its antiparticle are produced by a photon in a collision with a heavy spectator particle; it can also be created in other collisions, but a particle of the same type is always created with every antiparticle.

Antiparticles “annihilate” when they meet a particle of the same type. This is often misunderstood as “turning into gamma rays”, since that’s the only thing electrons and positrons can do (because they’re so light) — but that’s only one of the ways particles and antiparticles can annihilate in general.

Presumably there were equal numbers of particles and antiparticles after the Big Bang; but nowadays there seem to be very few antiparticles left. That is a bit of a mystery, but very lucky for us! It’s though that the “advantage” particles had was due to a small “CP violation” that gave one side slightly more ways to decay than the other side.

Note that the designation of one type as “normal” and the other type as “anti” is pure chauvinism: we’re made of the “normal” kind, of course.
