Noble metals like platinum and gold do not dissolve in common acids. These metals are soluble in aqua regia. It is a mixture of concentrated Hydrochloric acid and concentrated Nitric acid in a ratio of 3:1. It is the one and only mixture in which gold and platinum can be dissolved even though neither HCl nor HNO3 can dissolve gold and platinum solely. Aqua regia is highly corrosive and fuming liquid. It is one of the best reagents to dissolve noble metals such as gold and platinum.
