An atmosphere is a layer or a set of layers of gases surrounding a planet or other material body, that is held in place by the gravity of that body. An atmosphere is more likely to be retained if the gravity it is subject to is high and the temperature of the atmosphere is low.

Hey, here is your answer

The air that surrounds the earth surface is called atmosphere. It is composed of 78% of Nitrogen, 21% of oxygen and 1% other gases. The atmosphere is held in place around the earth by the gravitational pull of the earth and therefore it exerts pressure on the earth.
