The word atom is from Greek word;

a-means "not", tomos-mean to "cut"

it was named so because at that time atom was considered to be such smallest particle that can not be further divided.

But now we know that an atom contains further sub-atomic particles (i.e. electron proton and neutron) THUS according to the new definition an

"Atom is the smallest particle of matter having a central nucleus containing proton and neutron surrounded by a cloud of electrons".

The atoms of one element differ from that of other element only by the number of protons, neutrons and electrons.

i.e. the atoms Hydrogen gas have one proton and only one electron while that of Helium have two protons and two electrons .... upto .. so .. on ...

And hence the Silver and Gold are different because their atoms have different number of protons and neutrons.
