Attitudes define our identities and guide our behaviour to a person or an object.
The characteristics of attitudes are given as points:
1) They are learned predispositions.
2) They attitudes relatively enduring.
3) They are based in part on drives.
4) They are motivating forces.
5) They are decided towards an attitude object specific referent.
Attitudes have three main components. Attitudes are expressed through beliefs, emotions and certain actions.
The belief (cognitive attitude) component of an attitude is what we think about some particular object or issue.
The emotional (affective attitude) component consists of our feelings towards the attitude object.
The action (behavioural attitude) component refers to our behaviour towards the attitude object.
According to Allport's definition for attitude, it can also be defined as: An attitude is a readiness for response, However, in recent years, the evaluative aspect of attitudes is stressed. Hence, attitude is defined as "a learned predisposition to respond in a consistently favourable or unfavourable manner to the given person or a object or situation".
