Bakelite is a plastic that is made from the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde using a basic catalyst. It was the original plastic discovered by Leo Bakeland. It is a hard, rigid plastic that was originally used in many products, telephones for example. “Phenolic Microspheres” were used as the ablative coating on the Space Shuttle booster rockets. Bakelite corporation joined with several other companies to form the Union Carbide Corporation that was then purchased by Dow Chemical in 2001.
