During the magnetization of a ferromagnetic substance, when magnetizing field is increased or decreased steadily then magnetization of the substance does not increase or decrease steadily but proceeds in a series of minute jumps. This effect is called Barkhausen effect. This effect supports the domain Theory of magnetism.

Barkhausen effect, series of sudden changesin the size and orientation offerromagnetic domains, or microscopic clusters of aligned atomic magnets, that occurs during a continuous process of magnetizationor demagnetization. TheBarkhauseneffect offered direct evidence for the existence of ferromagnetic domains, which previously had been postulated theoretically.
