Basic difference is sodium is non-metal chlorine is gas chlorine is found diatomic while sodium is monoatomic. Atomic no. of Na is 11 and atomic mass is 23. Atomic no. of chlorine is 17 and Atomic mass is 35.

RichochetExpert: Yeah that's all true but if she's asking Na and Cl specifically, shouldn't we talk about ions?
Emly: sodium is having capacity to donate electrons and chlorine is having capacity to accept electron does they can combined to form NaCl
RichochetExpert: Exactly so shouldn't you say that in your answer?

For understanding this, let's take an example of the NaCl molecule. In this, Na gives away an electron, making it positive and Cl receives that extra electron, making it negative. This shows that Na has the tendency to give away electrons and from cations or positive ions and Cl has the tendency to gain extra electrons and form anions or negative ions.
