shortcuts are part of computer in the monitor section , from where you can easily do things faster ...
icons are what you see in the monitor home screen...like folder,.computer,...etc

When a shortcut is deleted from one place, there lies a backup in any other space as well. An icon when deleted does not have any space in another place. An icon may be in one area, unlike shortcut. The memory used by the shortcut is comparatively less than the icon. An icon uses more memory than a shortcut.
