The basicity of acid is the number of H+ ions that can be produced on ionization of 1 molecule of the acid. Example : Basicity of HCl is 1. H2SO4 is 2. In case of oxalic acid (COOH)2, one molecule of the acid furnishes 2 H+ to the solution therefore its basicity is 2.

The basicity of citric acid is 3.

  • The basicity of an acid is defined as its proton or hydrogen ion donating tendency.
  • The number of hydrogen ions an acid can donate is defined as its basicity.
  • The chemical formula of citric acid is C_6H_8O_7.
  • It can release or donate three hydrogen ions so, it acts as a tribasic acid and its basicity is 3.
