Carolus Linnaeus for the first time wrote about Binomial Nomenclature in his book "Systema Naturae". In Binomial Nomenclature, the first name is the generic name and second name is the specific name. In this system, each organism is having two names, so called Binomial Nomenclature.

For example, the scientific name of frog is Rana tigrina, in which Rana is a generic name and tigrina is a specific name.

Conventions to be followed while writing scientific names:-

i) Each organism should have two names. First is the name of genus (generic name) and second is the name of species (specific name).

ii) The scientific names of organisms should be written in English in slanting alphabets (italics).

iii) Generic name is written first and then the specific name.

iv) The first alphabet of generic name should be in capital letter and the rest should be in small letters.

The national bird of India is peacock and the scientific name of peacock is Pavo cristatus.
