"Bio Piracy” is a term, originally attributed to the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) (Mooney 1993), that refers “either to the unauthorized extraction of biological resources and/or associated traditional knowledge from developing countries, or to the patenting of spurious “inventions” based on such knowledge or resources without compensation” (Robinson 2010: 20). While inflammatory, the term encapsulates a complex and fraught debate about the relationship between developed and developing countries, the notion of shared heritage and who “owns” natural resources.
