Biogas is a mixture of methane (upto 75%), hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

The steps involved in obtaining biogas are as follows:-

1. Mixing:- In mixing tank, the mixture of animal dung and water is prepared, which is called slurry.

2. Digesting:- Digester tank is a sealed chamber in which there is no oxygen. Here, the anaerobic bacteria in the presence of water decomposes complex compounds of the slurry and biogas is produced.

3. Biogas is stored in the gas tank just above digester tank.

4. An outer chamber is present to take out the left-over slurry as manure.

Biogas a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide produced by the decomposition of plant and animal waste, that is used as fuel.

Following steps are involved in obtaining biogas:

  • Mixing (slurry of cattle-dung and water).
  • Digesting (cattle-dung undergoing decomposition by anaerobic bacteria).
  • Formation of biogas (mixture of methane, C02, H2 and H2S).
  • Spent slurry (residue left after the formation of biogas).
  • The process by which the biomass changes into biogas in the absence of air due to an anaerobic microorganisms is termed as an anaerobic decomposition.
