Biogas is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide. Following steps are

involved in obtaining biogas: 3

i) Mixing (Slurry of cattle-dung and water)

ii) Digesting (decomposition of cattle-dung by anaerobic bacteria)

iii) Formation of biogas

iv) Residue left after the formation of biogas.

Biogas is a production of methane which is used as fuel, via fermentation of organic matter.

There are 3 major steps involved in biogas production:

- Hydrolysis: In this step, break down of large organic molecules such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids into simpler units with the help of enzyme take place, externally.

- Fermentation: In this step, fermentation of intermediates of organic compounds takes place. In this step, products like volatile organic acids, alcohols, amino acids, CO2 are produced which are later on used as ingredients for the step next.

- Methane formation: In this step, methane producing bacteria decompose compounds completely and produce methane (biogas).
