Biomagnification, also known as bioamplification or biological magnification, is the increasing concentration of a substance, such as a toxic chemical, in the tissues of organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain . For  example, spraying a marsh to control mosquitoes will cause trace amounts of DDT to accumulate in the cells of microscopic aquatic organisms, the plankton, in the marsh. In feeding on the plankton, filter-feeders, like clams and some fish, harvest DDT as well as food.

Bio-magnification.

Explanation:

  • The accumulation of a special substance in an organism's body at various trophic levels of the food chain is described as Biomagnification.
  • The following are examples of Biomagnification:
  • The accumulation of insecticide DDT which gathers in zooplanktons. The small fishes used to consume these zooplanktons.
  • To spray a marsh for controlling mosquitoes will generate a minimum amount of DDT to accumulate in the cells of tiny aquatic organism, the plankton, in the marsh.
