Answer:
CaOCl2 is bleaching powder
Formation/Preparation:
It is prepared by adding Cl-obtained from chlor alkali process-to CaOH (slaked lime)
Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 = CaOCl2 + H2O
When it is exposed to air,it reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) to form Calcium carbonate and give chlorine gas {hence it also smells of chlorine}
CaOCl2 + CO2 = CaCO3 + Cl2
Uses:
1. for bleaching
- cotton and linen in textile industry
- wood pulp in paper factories
- washed clothes in laundry
2. as an oxidising agent in many chemical industries
3. to make drinking water free from germs
