Coagulation is the process by which blood changes from a liquid to a gel, forming a blood clot. It potentially results in hemostasis.

Hemostasis has three major steps: 1) vasoconstriction, 2) temporary blockage of a break by a platelet plug, and 3) blood coagulation, or formation of a fibrin clot. These processes seal the hole until tissues are repaired.

Hi Students,

◆ Blood clotting -

The process by which liquid blood is converted to gel-like clumps is called blood clotting (hemostasis).

There are 3 stages of hemostasis -

  1. vasoconstriction
  2. platelet plug
  3. blood clotting

(I) Vasoconstriction -

  • smooth muscle of the vessel wall contracts resulting in vasoconstriction

(II) Platelet plug formation -

  • endothelial injury exposes collagen fibres
  • platelet accumulate at site of injury and form platelet plug

(III) Blood clotting -

  • multiple fibrin filaments come together & form fibrin mesh
  • RBCs & WBCs are trapped here forming fixed blood clot

Hope this was useful for you.
