What is blood plasma and explain the constituents & functions of blood plasma

GooseBumps123: Alternative Title: blood plasma. Plasma, also called blood plasma, the liquid portion of blood. Plasma serves as a transport medium for delivering nutrients to the cells of the various organs of the body and for transporting waste products derived from cellular metabolism to the kidneys, liver, and lungs for excretion.

Plasma constitutes 55% of total blood volume. Composed of 90% water, salts, lipids and hormones, it is especially rich in proteins (including its main protein albumin), immunoglobulins, clotting factors and fibrinogen. ... Clotting factors, in combination with platelets, control hemorrhaging

☆ Blood is a special connective tissue consisting of a fluid matrix called plasma ( devoid of fibres ) and formed elements.

Plasma :

  • It is straw colour (pH 7.35 - 7.45), viscous aqueous solution (viscosity is due to the presence of various protiens and other cellular materials) constitutes about 55% to total volume of blood, about 30-35% of total extracellular fluids (ECF).

Constituents of Blood Plasma :

  • Water is about 90% - 92% and protiens contribute 6% -8%.

  • Diffusible constituents include electrolytes, anabolic and catabolic substances, hormones and vitamins.

Non-diffusible constituents include albumins, globulins, fibrinogen and various enzymes.

  • Major protiens are globulins, albumins & fibrinogen.

  • It also contains organic substances like glucose, urea (small amount), amino acids, lipids, endocrine secretion, enzymes.

  • Factors for cogulation are also present is the plasma in an inactive form.

  • Plasma without the clotting factors is called Serum.

Functions

  • Fibrinogens are needed for clotting or cogulation.

  • Albumins most abundant plasma protein help in osmotic balance.

  • Globulins are primarily involved in defense mechanisms.

  • It carries the digested food materials food materials amd endocrine secretions to different parts of body. It maintains the actual continuity of flow.
