The burden that tobacco use puts on society is increased addiction, causing untimely deaths, need for more hospitals and intensive health care and greater funds for awareness campaigns.

Effects of tobacco use:

  • Tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive chemical which orders the brain to release dopamine.
  • Dopamine is the  hormone responsible for making people feel relaxed and happy.
  • This feeling makes people want more tobacco and thus, they get addicted to tobacco.

Burden on society:

Since tobacco usage causes many health problems ranging from cancer to arthritis, it places a huge burden on society in the following ways:

  • Causing untimely deaths- It is hard for people to give up tobacco and so it becomes a long term addiction. With years of tobacco usage, patients develop serious health issues, often leading to untimely deaths. Each individual that passes away is a loss for society, since a valuable life is lost.
  • Need for more hospitals and intensive healthcare facilities- Given the high statistics of death in tobacco users, the government is forced to set up more hospitals for cancer patients. Private healthcare is expensive,  which is why patients flock to government hospitals. These hospitals have to be well equipped and staffed to handle the high number of patients. All expenses to run such hospitals comes from the general public's paid taxes, which is how each tobacco user using government facilities uses up the society's tax money.
  • Greater funds for awareness campaigns- The government has to fund awareness campaigns against tobacco usage. The campaigns usually involve giving out pamphlets, sending teams to villages, setting up help desks, etc. All these activities are funded by the common man's tax money. When the requirement of funds increases, new taxes are introduced, which society has to bear.
  • Stricter law enforcement- Laws have to be observed to ensure that tobacco is not sold around educational institutions and smoking is not done in public areas. Anyone found guilty of these charges has to be prosecuted. The legal action also requires personnel to first keep a check, then penalise the guilty person, or file a complaint, then handle the case in court. Each person from the policeman to the court officials to the judge are paid from the taxpayers' money.
  • Increased crime- Addicts often run out of money because their addiction requires them to buy too much tobacco. As a result, they take to crime to make quick money. This puts the general security of society at stake.

So, though an individual consumes tobacco, society has to shoulder the burden of the addiction.
