calcination is the process of heating ore in absence of air so as to remove moisture and volatile impurities and to convert carbonate ores into oxides.
ZnCO3(s)------heat----> ZnO(s)+CO2(g)

the carbonate ores are changed into oxides by heating strongly in limited air. This process is called Calcination.

e.g ZnCO3 ---heat----> ZnO + CO2
