Pressure exerted by atmosphere is known as Atmospheric Pressure. Everything which has mass exerts pressure. Atmosphere contains air that is why it exerts pressure. To understand it check out this interesting activity to understand Atmospheric Pressure.
Take a half filled glass of water and press a small piece of card on its mouth and press it so that there is no leakage turn the glass upside down. Remove the hand and you will see that that card remains stick to the glass due to atmospheric pressure.
