A sieve is a tool used for separating solids from liquids or larger pieces of something from smaller pieces. It consists of a metal or plastic ring with a wireor plastic net underneath, which the liquid or smaller pieces pass through.

Press the raspberries through a fine sieve to form a puree.

☆ Answer ☆

Seiving is the process of separating the bigger particles from the smaller ones with the help of a sieve.

Additional Information

This method is also based on the difference of the size of particles. This process is performed through a sieve that allows smaller particles of one substance to pass through it and the bigger particles of another substance are left on its surface.

Sieve :-

This is a mesh which has holes throughout it. These pores may be of different sizes. We choose a sieve having holes larger than the size of particles of one component and smaller than the other.

Procedure :-

The mixture is shaken on the sieve so that the particles smaller than the hole of the sieve pass through the hole and fall down and the particles larger than its holes remain on it.

• This method is used as construction site to separate stones and pebbles from sand.

• Small sieves are also used in home for sieving flour.
