The transport of water from the outside into the body of sponges(common name of porifera) into a cavity called spongocoel for nutrition,repiration and excretion is called canal system. water is sent inside by inhalent apertures,called as ostia and water is sent outside through an exhalent aperture,called as ostium.

Canal system of sponges are just inter-connected chambers, which are lined by collar cell ( choanocytes )
✘ Canal systems maintains the flow or the current of water throughout the body, since sponges hav cell aggregate body plan, they only have one opening to food , water , etc.. to take inside the body and also to eject waste materials. Spongocoel ( paragastric cavity ) act as its stomach and collects the food particles.
