  • Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas.

  • It combines with haemoglobin more rapidly than oxygen to form carboxyhaemoglobin.

  • Carbon monoxide forms the most stable combination with the haemoglobin of blood.

  • When a human being inhales air containing a normal concentration of oxygen as well as carbon monoxide, he/she suffers from suffocation because the product so formed, cannot be dissociated.

  • Carbon monoxide has about 200-250 times more affinity towards haemoglobin as compared to oxygen.

  • A carbon monoxide pressure of about 0.7 mm Hg (concentration of about 1% only) in alveolar air, can prove to be lethal.
