Explanation:

The sequence of events that occurs when the heart beats, beginning with contraction of the atria and ending with ventricular relaxation, is called as the cardiac cycle. There are two phases of a cardiac cycle, namely Systole and Diastole. The amount of blood flowing from the heart over a given period of time is known as cardiac output. Cardiac cycle consists of one heart beat or one cycle of contraction and relaxation of the cardiac muscle. The duration is about 0.8 sec.      

The successive stages of cardiac cycle are as follows:

1. Atrial systole
2. Beginning of ventricular systole
3. Complete ventricular systole
4. Beginning of ventricular diastole
5. Complete ventricular diastole
