Explanation:
Scientists around the world are racing to understand the deadly new coronavirus that emerged in China in December. The number of confirmed cases is already well ahead of the 8,100 known to have been infected by Sars, a similar coronavirus that caused a six-month epidemic in 2003. Though 99 per cent of patients are still in China, international travellers have spread it further afield, including to the US and Europe. There are fears that if the respiratory illness that probably started in a food market in the central city of Wuhan continues to spread, it could develop into a pandemic.
How dangerous is the new coronavirus?

At the latest count on Friday the novel coronavirus nCoV had killed 259 people in China and infected 11,791. More than 100 cases have been confirmed outside China. With numbers increasing by around 25 per cent every day, it seems to transmit more readily between humans than Sars.
Computer modelling at several universities suggests that each new coronavirus case is infecting on average about 2.5 other people — and that official counting greatly underestimates the real number of infections. The latest study by the University of Hong Kong, published in the Lancet on Friday, estimated that up to 75,800 people had been infected in Wuhan by January 25.
