This sign convention is known as New cartesian sign convention. Sign is taken as−(negative) from pole of a spherical mirror towards object along the principle axis. This means sign is always taken as−(negative) in front of a spherical mirror.

Explanation:

According to the new Cartesian sign convention for the refraction of light through the concave and convex lens: All distances are measured from the optical centre of the lens. Distances measured in the direction opposite to the direction of incident light are considered negative. In physics, a sign convention is a choice of the physical significance of signs (plus or minus) for a set of quantities, in a case where the choice of sign is arbitrary. ... Sometimes, the term "sign convention" is used more broadly to include factors of i and 2π, rather than just choices of sign.
