it is the linkage of atoms of an element in long chains like in petroleum and plastics. atoms are smallest parts of element. like in some plastics the formula is C6H14. this means 6 atoms of carbon have linked to 14 atoms of hydrogen to form a long chain,i.e.,the plastics.
