why is India known as India?

british were unable to pronounce hindustan so they called it india during colonial period and the name stuck to india till now

the name India came from the word Indus,which originates from the old Persian word HINDUS.the latter term stems from the Sanskrit word sindhus,which was the historical local appellation for the indus river.the ancient greeks to the indians as indois,which translates as 'the people of the indus'
