It is the property of carbon atom by which it forms the bonds with other carbon atoms to form larger molecules. It is clear from this property that carbon atoms are acting as smaller, monomers which are combine to form large molecules. Compounds formed by the property of catenation may be of three types :

  • In form of long chains
  • in form of branches
  • in form of rings

Further, bonds in between carbon atoms may be single, double or triple.

No element other than carbon exhibit such property of catenation. One such property is found in silicon. It forms the compounds by linking with hydrogen. There are formation of chains upto seven or eight atoms. Beyond this, the compounds with long chains become very reactive and unstable. Hence, no formation of longer and larger compounds.
