The nameorganellecomes from the idea that these structures are a part of cells, like what anorganis to thebody(hence the nameorganelle, the suffix-ellebeing adiminutive). Organelles are identified bymicroscopy, and can also be purified bycell fractionation. There are many types of organelles, particularly ineukaryoticcells. Whileprokaryotesdo not possess organellesper se, some do contain protein-basedbacterial microcompartments, which are thought to act as primitive organelles.

membrane-bound compartment or structure in a cell that performs a special function. Supplement. A eukaryotic cell contains many organelles, for example, the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, mitochondria, and chloroplast (plastid).
