Cell Organelles:-

Cell organelles are small structures scattered in the cytoplasm. Various types of organelles present in cell perform different functions.

Some of these are mentioned below:-

  • Mitochondria
  • Vacuoles
  • Endoplasmic reticulum
  • Ribosomes
  • Golgi bodies
  • Plastids
  • Centrosome

1) Mitochondria:- These are small, rod- like structures found in all cells. They provide energy for all the activities. This energy is produced by the oxidation of food. Thus, they are often called powerhouses of the cell.

2) Vacuoles:- These are sac-like structures. Plant cells have large vacuoles as compared to animal cells. Vacuoles store soluble food, wastes and secretions of cell dissolved in water as cell sap.

3) Endoplasmic reticulum:- It is a network of tubules and channels and is involved in the synthesis, storage and transport of cell products.

4) Ribosomes:- These are small granular structures scattered in the cytoplasm. These are the sites of protein synthesis.

5) Golgi Bodies:- These are made up of tubules and vesicles and is responsible for the secretion of chemical substances like enzymes, hormones and proteins.

6) Plastids:- These are present only in plant cells. Plastids contain certain pigments that have a specific role to play in the functioning of plants.

These are as follows:-

  • Chloroplasts
  • Chromoplasts
  • Leucoplasts

Chloroplasts:- Chloroplasts are green plastids. They contain chlorophyll which help in photosynthesis.

Chromoplasts:- Chromoplasts contain non-green pigments that give colour to flowers and fruits.

Leucoplasts:- Leucoplasts are colourless plastids which help in storage of food.

7) Centrosome:- Centrosome is located near the nucleus. It is involved in cell division and is found only in animal cells.
