Question :-

What is CFC ? Is it harmful for our health ? explain.

Answer :-

CFC stands for Chlorofluorocarbons.

CFCs are nontoxic, nonflammable chemicals containing atoms of carbon, chlorine, and fluorine.

They are used in the manufacture of :-

  • aerosol sprays
  • blowing agents for foams and packing materials
  • as solvents
  • as refrigerants

CFCs are classified as halocarbons, a class of compounds that contain atoms of carbon and halogen atoms.

Individual CFC molecules are labeled with a unique numbering system.

_______________

Harmful effects of CFCs :-

CFCs when released in atmosphere this gas particles reaches upto ozone layer and following happens :-

  • The destruction of an ozone molecule by a chlorine atom. UV radiation breaks a chlorine atom off a CFC molecule.

  • The chlorine atom breaks an ozone molecule apart into an oxygen molecule (O2) and a chlorine monoxide molecule (ClO).

  • A free oxygen atom bumps the chlorine atom out, forming an oxygen molecule.

  • This leaves the chlorine atom free to attack and destroy another ozone molecule.

Stratospheric ozone loss can result in potential harm to human health and the environment, including:

  • increased incidence of skin cancer and cataracts

  • immune system system damage

  • damage to terrestrial and aquatic plant life

  • increased formation of ground-level ozone (smog)

Answer:

CFCs contribute to the loss of the protective ozone layer, which blocks ultraviolet rays from the sun. This exposes more people to UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer.
