The method of charging a body by bringing it closer to a charged body, is called charging by induction.

The kind of charge that the body acquires, depends:

1. On bringing a positively charged body, close to an uncharged body, the similar positive electrons on its surface are repelled. The surface of the uncharged body, thus now develops a negative charge.

2. Similarly, when a negatively charged body is brought closer to an uncharged body, the similar negative electrons on its surface are repelled. The surface of the uncharged body, thus here, develops a positive charge.

[Points 1 and 2 are satisfied due to the property, of like charges to repel, and unlike charges to attract one another]

Hope it helps!
