The chemical formula of diamond is C which is the chemical symbol for the element carbon. Soot and graphite are also made up of carbon atoms and have the same chemical symbol, C. So what's the difference between soot, graphite and diamond if they are all made up of the same carbon atoms?


sumansabhnani: As said by your friends, the chemical formula of diamond and graphite will be simply C and not C4. This is because both the substances involve extensive bonding between its constituent carbon atoms. Thus there are not mere 60 atoms of carbon, rather both diamond and graphite can be regarded as macromolecules of carbon
