Chlorination is the reaction in which both saturated and unsaturated compounds react directly with chlorine to form a chlorinated compound. The former requires UV light to initiate homolysis of Cl2 while for later, we require some solvent or lewis acid for electrophilic addition or substitution reaction depending upon the reageants.
