Cinnabar is a common ore of mercury. Since mercury is a very unreactive metal , its compounds like oxides or sulphides can be reduced to metal by heating alone .
When cinnabar is heated in air , it is first convert into mercuric oxide (HgO). Mercuric oxide is reduced to mercury on further heating.
2Hg +3O2 --------> 2HgO +2SO2
2HgO------------> 2Hg + O2

cinnebar is a mercury sulphide [HgS]. Metal is extracted by cinebar by the process of roasting.
2HgS + 3O2 WHILE ROASTING 2Hgo +2SO2
Ore of mercury is known as Cinnabar.
Extraction of Mercury. Most of the world's mercury is obtained from its main ore, cinnabar or vermillion with the chemical structure mercury sulphide (HgS). Cinnabar is usually found in a massive or granular form but can also occur as small crystals also. When cinnabar is heated in air, it is first converted into mercuric oxide (HgO). By heating it further, mercury is obtained.
Hg+SO2---->HgS+O2
