- The central nervous system consists of brain and spinal cord.
- Brain is the most important and delicate part of human body. It is enclosed inside the skull and is protected by three membranous coverings called meninges.
- The membranes contain a fluid between them called cerebrospinal fluid. It nourishes the brain and absorb shocks.
- The brain has three main parts cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla oblongata.
Cerebrum:
- This is the largest part of the brain. It is divided into right and left halves called cerebral hemispheres. The outer part of cerebrum is lightly convoluted with ridges and grooves. These ridges and grooves increase the surface area of the brain. Surface of cerebrum is made up of gray matter and the inner side is made up of white matter. The cerebrum controls mental activities such as thinking and reasoning. It is a seat of intelligence and center for memory, cerebrum perceives the impulses such as pain, touch, smell, taste, hearing and light. The right cerebral hemisphere controls the left half of the body and the left cerebral hemisphere controls the right half the body.
Cerebellum:
- This is the smaller part of the brain. It is present at the base and under the large cerebrum. The main function of cerebellum is to maintain balance of the body. It also coordinates voluntary actions such as muscular activities.
Medulla Oblongata:
- This is triangular in shape and is the lowest part of the brain located at the base of the skull. It is also called brainstem. It connects the brain and the spinal cord. Medulla oblongata controls the involuntary activities such as heartbeat, respiratory system, coughing and sneezing.
