It is based on the idea that religion is the principal basis of social community.
Communalism involves thinking along the following lines;
The followers of a particular religion must belong to one community.
o Their fundamental interests are the same.
o Any difference that they may have is irrelevant or trivial for community life.
o It follows that people who follow different religions cannot belong to the same social community.
o Their interests are bound to be different and involve a conflict.

Communal politics is defined as the type of politics based on a certain specified community. Here people are themselves chosen among their own community and represent the whole.

Communal politics get its hold over a long period of time and not a sudden phenomenon. Thus the idea behind communal politics are:-

  • A certain specific community want their representation at the higher levels of the Government.
  • It is dependent upon grabbing the powers in political system. The power should be legitimate in order to implement a certain specific agenda before the government.
  • These communal politics had its roots in the local political system. The first formed as a pressure group and then transform into an organized political party.
  • The other idea behind gaining interset in communal politics is that the community specific needs and agendas like that of a minority need to addressed in the Governance system so as to support the downtrodden also.
